What is Augmented Reality?

Did you know that the technological era has developed so rapidly? The real world and the virtual world are slowly becoming one. As we move towards the future, the technology being developed becomes increasingly sophisticated. One of the augmented Reality.

Augmented Reality (AR) technology has become an important field in Indonesian research. The potential of AR is now increasing rapidly, especially as we are starting to approach the Metaverse era where the virtual world can be directly projected into the real world.

What is Augmented Reality?

Augmented Reality abbreviated as AR is a technology that combines two-dimensional or three-dimensional virtual objects and then projects them into the real world.

Currently, Augmented Reality is used in human life, both in the fields of industry, health, military, and even in the realm of education, it has begun to be developed.

Augmented Reality (AR) can be defined as a technology that is capable of combining two-dimensional or three-dimensional virtual objects into a real environment and then displaying or projecting them in real-time. AR can be used to help visualize abstract concepts for understanding and structure of an object model. Some AR applications are designed to provide users with more detailed information from real objects.

How does Augmented Reality work?

Augmented reality has indeed been developed so far, so what? how augmented reality work?

AR technology can be applied to all senses, including hearing, touch, and smell. Apart from being used in fields such as health, military, and the manufacturing industry, AR has also been applied in devices used by many people, such as smartphones. Augmented Reality works based on image detection, and the image used is a marker. The way it works is that the camera will detect the given marker, then after recognizing and marking the marker pattern the webcam will calculate whether the marker matches the database it has. If not, the marker information will not be processed, but if appropriate, the marker information will be used to render and display 3D objects or animations that have been previously created. This is displayed with the help of a mobile device. Here the mobile device is tasked with providing output in the form of projections of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional objects into the real world in real-time.

Types of Augmented Reality

Be aware, if augmented Reality there are several types of, take a look at the types of Augmented Reality the following.

Marker Based AR

Marker-based AR technology is Augmented Reality using markers or object markers that have patterns that can be read via webcam media on a computer or mobile device. The visuals used can be in any form, the most commonly used are printed QR codes or special symbols as markers.

Marker-based AR works by calculating the position and orientation of the marker to position content. That way, the marker will display 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional objects that can be seen through the device so that it can be seen by the user. An example of using marker-based AR is filters on Instagram.

Markerless AR

Markerless AR is an AR technology that allows virtual objects to be positioned in a real image environment by examining the features in the data in real-time.

This type of AR relies on the hardware on the cellphone, be it a camera or GPS to capture existing data, without the need to scan real images like Marker-based AR technology.

There are four categories of markerless AR:

  • Location-based WITH, like in the Pokemon GO game;
  • Projection-based WITH, as in business or industrial replica;
  • Overlay WITH, such as replacing the original appearance of an object with an updated virtual image of that object for the human eye;
  • Contour-based WITH, such as to outline certain objects with lines in order to facilitate certain situations.

Example of Application of Augmented Reality

  • Social media
    You must be familiar with Instagram social media, right? In fact, currently, Instagram is developing Augmented Reality technology which is applied to Instagram. This is proven by several filters that are capable of displaying 3-dimensional objects projected using the user’s smartphone and of course, almost all Instagram users can use these filters. In fact, this is a very interesting and entertaining filter for users.
  • Game Development
    Do you know the game Pokemon GO? Many people already know that the Pokemon Go game uses AR technology. This phenomenal game is really very interesting because it has succeeded in attracting the hearts of users by displaying 3-dimensional objects, namely Pokemon, with real-world interactions. Pokemon GO has really succeeded in attracting attention and making players feel as if they are in the world of Pokemon.
  • Medical
    In the medical world, AR technology is also applied, for example, AR is used for medical training for medical personnel. It can be in the form of applications or other surgical and health equipment, for example, the clinic in Cleveland, Case Western Reserve University, where students use AR headsets to learn the ins and outs of anatomy.
  • Education
    Nowadays, the world of education is also intensively implementing AR technology. This sophistication is able to provide a new color in the field of education. Its use is not only centered on insight but also touches the emotional side of students. The experience they feel stimulates their brains to absorb knowledge more progressively.
